• Had a wee discussion with Joyce re diet coke and decided to confirm with HNIs, I have also manged to find a copy of the spec so will be added to the database. Hi Nicky,   Based on the nutritional information provided, Diet Coke is sugar free. It contains 46mg caffeine per 12fl oz. The maximum permitted for a soft drink in schools is 150mg per litre. 1 litre contains 35 fl oz.   Divide 46 by 12 to determine the caffeine in 1floz of Coke = 2.91mg caffeine/fl oz. Multiply by 2.91 by 35 to calculate mg caffeine in 1 litre = 134.16mg/lt   Going by this calculation Diet Coke is compliant.  However there are other factors to take into consideration when making decisions about whether to permit sale of this and other similar drinks in secondary schools, including education young people about the place of these drinks as part of a healthy diet. My advice would be to everyone is proceed with caution!   Kind regards, Shirley

I meant to scan for you today but I forgot, I should be at the office end of next week so will scan at that point Re portion size in PS we give 200mls (7fl oz), We are currently carrying out an exercise to see if a portion of soup has a 40g portion of vegetables.

• HI Gerry, we were told by Lyndsey Fog if we get carried away using too much sweeteners then we may end up with a review of the standards in a few years as the target is to reduce children's sweetened palate, their official stance is that there is no issue with sweeteners. We have tried a few items with sweeteners but currently not using.

Q A colleague mentioned that with the new standards all home baking needs to contain fruit.  Can you confirm this for me?   A All baked products must meet the specific standard for sweetened, baked products and desserts which sets requirements for fat, saturated fat and sugar as follows   Primary school lunch time Sweetened baked products and desserts can be served no more than three times per week. When served they must contain no more than 15g of total sugar per portion. Other times of the primary school day including breakfast clubs, mid-morning break, tuck shops, nurture groups and after-school clubs Only products meeting the following criteria can be provided:  No more than 7g of total sugar per portion.  No more than 13g of fat per portion.  No more than 4g of saturated fat per portion.     Secondary school analysed lunch AND All other times of the secondary school day Only products meeting the following criteria can be provided:  No more than 10g of total sugar per portion.  No more than 19g of fat per portion.  No more than 6g of saturated fat per portion.   Secondary school analysed lunch AND All other times of the secondary school day Only products meeting the following criteria can be provided:  No more than 10g of total sugar per portion.  No more than 19g of fat per portion.  No more than 6g of saturated fat per portion.         A confusion may have arisen from the examples of the secondary school analysed lunch in the Nutritional Analysis Manual. Because 1 portion of fruit must be included in the secondary school analysed lunch, all dessert items shown there include fruit, for example as fruit crumble, fruit muffins, fruit flan as well as a portion of fresh fruit, fruit platters or fruit kebabs. This is in order to meet the requirement for a secondary school analysed meal to provide 2 portions of vegetables and 1 portion of fruit.

• Where the sandwich or other similar items are available and not part of the analysed school lunch, a portion of vegetables must be provided and included in the cost as set out in the HEiS guidance under Standard 1. So even those items seen as ‘grab and go’ must include a portion of vegetables in the cost. This is likely to involve further monitoring to see if provision equates to greater waste, increased uptake or ? Text from HEiS, Fruit and Vegetables, Standard 1 page 43/44 (below Table 4) Other times of the secondary school day including non-analysed school lunch options breakfast clubs, mid-morning break, tuck shops, vending machines, nurture groups and after-school clubs Portions of fruit and/or vegetable must be made available in any place within the premises where food is provided. A portion of salad or vegetables must be provided and included in the cost of any non-analysed main lunch option. The Technical Working Group report defines a main lunch item as ·      a traditional lunch such as roast dinner,   ·      sandwich, baguette or panini,  ·      pizza slice or baked potato.  Where a sandwich or other such item is included as part of an analysed school meal, it must do so as part of a 2 course meal and include a minimum of two portions of vegetables and one of fruit   Secondary school analysed lunch AND School Hostel evening meal for At least two portions of vegetables and one portion of fruit must be offered every day as part of an analysed school lunch and school hostel evening meal.   The Technical Working Group report introduced the secondary school analysed lunch and stated that it should include a range of lunch options which are popular with young people across the week and should be clearly marketed on the menu.   The Nutritional Analysis Manual refers to this in section 9 stating a minimum of 2 lunch choices each day that reflect popular main meal choices across the week and that the secondary school analysed lunch choices must be easily identifiable, promoted and available to all young people for the equivalent cost of a free school lunch. So if sandwiches are popular we would expect them to appear as a meal choice on at least one day of the menu analysis in combination with other items to achieve the 2 courses required, and include the stipulated ‘at least two portions of vegetables and one portion of fruit’. It’s difficult to see how providing ‘free vegetables’ would meet this standard as set out.
