• Hi Gerry, We ask our parents to complete a medical prescribed diet form detailing the dietician or Drs information for reference but this also reduced the number of requests. We currently have a Gluten free CPU which offers a mirrored menu to the main menu. Sonia meets parents to discuss the pupils requirements and we ensure an option is available for the pupil by adapting the menu or recipe. In the event of a no option being suitable then we provide a different meal to meet the pupils needs but try to keep the option as similar to the menu as possible. As we have a vegan CPU we often tap into that menu eg pupil is allergic to fish so we provide the vegan fishless fingers. Early years has had a massive impact on the volume of requests.

• Hi Claire, my high school catering managers have been making hot choc with coco powder and milk in pump flasks. Pupils can have a sugar portion if they want it. Not much help but pupils are taking it. N

• Hi Elaine, We are running as normal in secondarys except with screens, pre packed main meals and all items individually wrapped. Revals in use as normal along with pre order app and parent pay. Nicky

• Hi Jayne, We have not had many complaints but like others we have already suffered the pain when making the changes as a phase approach. Catering staff have been great and spending their time weighing out fruit and vegetables. :) Our uptake in secondarys are down by about 30% but it is Ramadan so our uptake will be impacted, primary schools down by 15% however it is difficult to identify whether the impact is regs or covid. N

• Hi Gerry, We did product sampling with the pupils pre pandemic and they said they would rather have a quality product that is smaller. We are staying with Craigmillar sponge mix and giving relevant portion size. currently we are using the Middleton cookie mix but also about to do product sampling with the Premier food low fat cookie mix. N

• Hi, Please see below re Bagels, I had put on the bread discussion when the question was asked as I had queried bagels when we were putting the guidance together. Shirley/Lesley have also been receiving quite a few queries over bagels so have asked that I post on discussion board for the standards. Hope this helps, happy Easter. N “I have checked and the Technical Working Group have not classed bagels as either a bread product or a sweetened baked product. That being the case, bagels can be served freely in school, provided they comply with all other standards. Lesley and I will monitor provision on this basis.”
